Employment Situation:
Work opportunities for the casual foreign visitor are somewhat limited in Jordan. The majority of foreigners working in Jordan are on contract work with foreign multinationals and development organisations (Amman is the 'gateway to Iraq' and a key base for the continuing efforts to rebuild its neighbour).
There is the possibility of picking up casual English teaching work if you hunt around hard for opportunities.
Fluent Arabic speakers might have more success, though the process of obtaining a work permit is not particularly straightforward. Engage a knowledgeable local to assist you.
Obtaining the Ministry of Labor's Authorization to Work:
Investors are granted residency permits through the Ministry of Interior Delegate at the OSS in JIB. Any Non-Jordanian investor or worker is required to obtain a work permit.
There are some procedures he/she should follow to get it:
- Ministry of Labor is the only Government entity which is empowered to issue work permits for Non-Jordanian employers and workers.
- The approval of the Minister or his representative is issued according to the documents attached to the permit application.
- The required work experience and efficiency should not be available in Jordanian worker force, or the number of them available does not meet the needs of the project.
- The Non-Jordanian workers must obtain a work permit from the minister or his representative before coming to Jordan, and it shall not exceed a period of one year. The permit is renewable.
- There are charges for issuing, renewing or replacing the work permit.
- The employer must submit a judicial or bank guarantee to ensure the workers rights.
