Welfare:

Government expenditures on welfare amounted to 8.6 percent of the budget in 1986. Social security and welfare were governed by the Social Security Law of 1978. In 1986 all establishments employing ten persons or more came under the law's provisions. Ultimately the law will apply to all establishments employing five or more persons. The employer contributed 10 percent of salary and the employee contributed 5 percent, and the contribution covered retirement benefits, termination pay, occupational diseases, and work injuries.

The plan was for medical insurance to be included eventually under the social security contribution. In April 1988, the Social Security Corporation covered 465,000 workers employed by approximately 7,000 public and private establishments.

Education:

Jordan Education system consists of:
  1. Compulsory education (6-16 years old)

  2. School education (6-16 years old)

  3. Secondary (16-18 years old)

Certificate/Diploma awarded: Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate)

  4. Vocational (16-18 years old)

    Certificate/Diploma awarded: Completion Certificate

  5. Access to higher education is open to holders of the General Secondary Education Certificate who can then choose between private Community Colleges, public Community Colleges or universities. Higher education has developed along two separate lines, with traditional universities on the one hand, and non-university level institutions (Community Colleges) on the other. All post-secondary education is the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Council of Higher Education.

Religion:

Virtually the entire population is Sunni Muslim. Islam is the established religion, and as such its institutions received government support. The 1952 Constitution stipulates that the king and his successors must be Muslims and sons of Muslim parents.

Christians constitute most of the rest, of whom two-thirds adhere to the Greek Orthodox church. Other Christian groups include the Greek Catholics, also called the Melchites, or Catholics of the Byzantine rite, who recognize the supremacy of the Roman pope; the Roman Catholic community, headed by a pope-appointed patriarch; and the small Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, or Syrian Jacobite Church, whose members use Syriac in their liturgy.

Most non-Arab Christians are Armenians, and the majority belong to the Gregorian, or Armenian, Orthodox church, while the rest attend the Armenian Catholic Church. There are several Protestant denominations representing communities whose converts came almost entirely from other Christian sects.
